The department has one full-time director, two full-time staff members and four part-time student officers. Staff is on duty 24 hours a day throughout the year to guard against and investigate person or property crimes, eliminate or alleviate dangerous situations, to provide escort services, investigate reports of lost property, safeguard and return found items, assist motorists with vehicle problems, issue vehicle parking permits, and enforce the parking regulations of the University.

The Public Safety Department uses an access control system to monitor and control different levels of access to buildings at various times of day. Although not a primary mission of the department, department staff will often assist students and faculty who have forgotten their keys or access cards.
