Individuals who graduate with a degree in Exercise and Sport Science (ESS) have the opportunity to make a positive difference in the quality of life of those they work with and serve. The mission of the ESS degree program at Concordia is to apply the best of sports and science knowledge in training leaders to transform our society.

Concordia University's ESS program is designed to prepare students for work in the health and fitness industry. Possible employment settings may include health clubs, sport performance labs, athletic teams, personal training, recreational facilities, and work-site wellness programs.

A degree in ESS will also prepare students for graduate study in a variety of fields including Community Health, Health Promotion and Wellness, Athletic Training, Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Nutrition, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, Physical Therapy and other programs.

The focus of the program is on mastery of skills, research projects, and internships. Small class sizes accelerate learning and prepare student's to pass the necessary exams and to be employed or admitted to a graduate program upon graduation.

Concordia's ESS Program prepares students:

  • to demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the human body and it's response to physical activity, exercise, and sports
  • to understand the basic pathophysiological responses of the body caused by disease, heredity, and other risk factors
  • to assess health and fitness in clinical and field settings
  • to prescribe exercise or develop programs based on assessment in clinical and field settings
  • to demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the human body’s nutritional needs and weight management factors associated with physical activity, exercise, and sports participation
  • to analyze factors associated with behavior change and motivation
  • to initiate and persist in physical activity, exercise, and sports
  • to apply principles of safety, injury prevention, and emergency procedures
  • to understand fundamental fitness program administration, quality assurance, and outcome assessment
  • to read, synthesize in written and oral form, design, and apply scientific literature related to exercise, fitness, and sports training
