Success to Significance
With a 100-year legacy of achievement, Concordia University is the inheritor of Lutheran educational traditions which uphold conviction and integrity. We equip students with knowledge, values, and skills to serve and transform society. Our approach to educating students and working with our neighbors has built momentum and attracted more students and community partners to Concordia. In order to expand the reach of our mission, and as the student population grows, the university has identified major projects which will fulfill immediate needs as well as enhance Concordia University for the future. Building a future includes:
- Library for the 21st Century
-
As the center of learning on the Concordia University campus, our new library/learning center with better technology and more resources will liberate thought, forge critical minds, and inform character. This library is also a community resource, effectively changing the lives of those in the community, offering information and inspiration. Concordia’s will actively collaborate with regional library services to support the under-served community of Northeast Portland including designated community space. The new library/learning center will also house several special academic centers—- The Center for Nursing Studies will improve our ability to educate compassionate graduates with excellent technical abilities and clinical reasoning skills and experience.
- The Center for Applied Lutheran Leadership is a partnership between the Northwest District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and Concordia University Portland. The purpose of CALL will be to provide programming, enhance leadership, and establish partnerships to help create vibrant, healthy congregations that successfully advance their mission. The Shakespeare Authorship Research Centre will insure ongoing arenas for the debate and discussion around the authorship of the works attributed to Shakespeare. Concordia has for over ten years been the academic home for this scholarly investigation. - The Northwest Center for Children’s Literature serves as a resource library of the most current children’s books for educators, parents, and others important to the reading lives of young people, as well as events and programs to influence teaching practices.
- The Center for Volga German Studies supports research into and preservation of the history, traditions, heritage, and accomplishments of the Volga Germans. Critical studies of distinctive cultural histories transforms our understanding of the world.
- The Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching will move from its current location in Hagen Campus Center to the new library, allowing for improved ability to transform Concordia into a learner-centered institution.
- Athletic Facilities
Athletics prepares leaders who model character in action. Expanded access to athletic fields means that more collegiate and community athletes can experience the type of individual and team success that helps them excel in life. Successful athletic programs will enrich the overall collegiate experience for all students, including intramural participants and fans. Improved facilities will also attract local, regional, and national events that will elevate Concordia’s reputation as the home of champions of character, provide positive role models for young fans and energize the community through sport.- Concordia strives to be among the top competitors in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Improved facilities and resources will help our coaches and student-athletes reach their full potential. Concordia’s new baseball and soccer facility will also serve the community through hosting tournaments, clinics, and camps.
- Elements of the athletic facilities project include:
- High quality athletic facilities for soccer and baseball will improve quality and reduce travel to off-campus facilities for practice.
- The addition of lights and synthetic surface will expand the hours the facility can be used, reducing conflicts with classes and increasing athletic opportunities.
- Improved training resources for coaches will elevate athletic performance and reduce injury.
- Stadium seating, dugouts, concessions, scoreboards and the alumni plaza will enrich the experience of fans.
- Clinics for young athletes can host larger groups more frequently.
- Student Center
- Once the current library moves to its new location, renovations to the Hagen Campus Center will create a much needed student-centered space including gathering areas, student services, meeting rooms and more.
