Background

The C.U. Handbell Ensembles are directed by Helen Hollenbeck. Helen has been on the faculty since 1992 teaching music and education courses. She also served as the interim director of the Concordia University Choir in the Fall of 1998. She holds a master's degree from the University of Portland in organ performance with a primary focus on the music of J.S. Bach.

As a music educator, Professor Hollenbeck focuses on outstanding repertoire, ringing technique, and musicality with the handbell ensembles she directs. Under her leadership, the program has grown to include opportunities for talented students to participate in small specialized ensemble ringing as well as solo ringing at Concordia.

As a church musician, she has held numerous positions in California and in Oregon. She is also currently Director of Music at Zion Lutheran Church in Portland, Oregon, where she serves as organist, choral, and handbells director.
