Service Experience Team Opportunities
The Oregon Food Bank
Students travel up to 3 times each month (Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings available) to the Oregon Food Bank in Northeast Portland to work in the Volunteer Action Center repacking food to help ensure donations reach those in need in a timely manner. Volunteers may be sorting, repacking, labeling, or processing donations that will be sent out into the local community and given to those in need. Concordia students work alongside up to 100 other community volunteers on these efforts to alleviate hunger in the Portland area.
Night Strike Homeless Outreach Projects
Students travel to Night Strike (sponsored by Bridgetown Inc.) each Thursday except the final Thursday in a month throughout the school year. Night Strike is a unique opportunity for people to gather under the Burnside Bridge on the park side of Naito Parkway every Thursday night and love people because people matter. It is an opportunity for members of Portland’s homeless community to hang out, enjoy a hot meal, receive a free haircut, shave, have their feet washed and have their old shoes/clothes/sleeping bags replaced. It is also a chance for you to come down and share in the experience, help serve the needs of the homeless in our community, and more importantly, invest in lives and build relationships with the people you meet.
Habitat for Humanity (Builds take place 1 Saturday per month)
Concordia University hosts a Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter. This chapter is a group of students who are interested in working toward the mission of raising awareness about affordable housing, advocating for those in need, educating the community about what Habitat for Humanity is about, and creating opportunities to be physically involved in building homes for those in our community. The Campus Chapter is a campus club and students can join the club by contacting the Office of Service Leadership. The Chapter also hosts monthly build opportunities to get out in the community and help construct affordable homes for families who are partnering with Habitat for homeownership.
