Time sure flies when you are having fun. We are already up and running in the second semester here at Concordia. Students are working hard and the campus is full of life. This edition of the eAlert will keep you up to date as you can continue to be involved with Concordia either on campus or from far away. I included an announcement about the recent death of DCE Jonathan Cleveland. Many of you knew him, and we wanted to get the information out as quickly as we could. The service for him is this coming Saturday (the details are below). Please remember his family in your prayers. I have some personal news to share with all of you, too. I have accepted a new position back into Lutheran camping ministries. I have enjoyed being here in the Concordia University Foundation for three years and will miss the relationships with those of you whom I have been privileged to talk and work with. Prior to working at Concordia I served as the Executive Director for Camp Lutherwood in Oregon and had hired many Concordia students throughout the years to work on summer staff. Again, I will be leading Camp Lutherwood, Oregon and working with students from Concordia! I will continue to teach the course on Christian Outdoor Education so will continue to be around campus, just not on a daily basis.
This is a wonderful institution and I will miss the students, faculty, staff, and all the alumni very much. We are expecting a very smooth transition to the next alumni director and the plans currently in place for 2010 will continue. In the meantime, Mark Deuel may be contacted at mdeuel@cu-portland.edu or 503-493-6579. Thanks for your past and continued support of this University and of me. You are what makes this place so great.

A Biological Wonderland!
Sea turtles! Blue-footed boobies! Marine iguanas! Giant tortoises! Few places on earth have features of flora and fauna as unique to an isolated biological system as the Galapagos Islands. This is one of the places that inspired Charles Darwin to develop his ideas on the diversity of life on earth, which later became known as the theory of evolution. This experience will give a glimpse into part of Darwin’s journey and the experiences that shaped the development of the modern science of biology.
A Cultural Adventure:
This experience in Ecuador will offer insight into a world very different from your own. The Spanish architecture, culture of indigenous Indians, textile markets, and more will give a glimpse of a unique people whose culture was shaped since ancient times. The mixture of environments from the heights of Quito at over 9,000 feet to sea level both at the mainland and in the Galapagos will allow for experiencing a variety of beautiful environments.

Letter of Intent Signed to Purchase Front St. Property
Concordia University announced an initial agreement today to purchase the property at 501 Front St. in downtown Boise, ID for the new Concordia University School of Law, scheduled to open in 2011.
"We're delighted about the prospect of settling the Concordia University School of Law in the heart of Boise, within close proximity of the courts, state and local governments and law firms," said Concordia University President Chuck Schlimpert. "With our emphasis on community service and engagement, we look forward to contributing a wealth of new resources and talent to Boise's downtown core and to the State as a whole."
The University evaluated approximately 40 potential sites during the past year before deciding on the Front St. location. The property's purchase is expected to close by April 2010, following a period of due diligence. Colliers International is the real estate broker on the transaction.
The news follows an earlier announcement that Cathy Silak, former Idaho Supreme Court justice, was named as dean of the new law school. In addition, the Dean’s Advisory Council is chaired by Richard Fields, a partner at Moffatt Thomas Barrett Rock & Fields CHTD, and includes 26 local and regional, business and civic leaders.
"This site is a win-win for the City of Boise and the University, and we look forward to close collaboration with the City during planning and development of the property," said Silak.
The current Front St. property is a two-story brick building with approximately 17,000 square feet. Concordia will utilize the existing structure but also plans to develop an additional 30,000 square feet of space to meet the law school’s need for classrooms, offices and amenitites. Union Corner Construction, the general contractor, plans to source all jobs and subcontractors from the local Boise area.
