Education Requirements

Education Requirements

Most students will complete their general education requirements, electives, and early childhood lower-division requirements prior to entering this degree completion program. Concordia University offers early childhood lower-division courses online for those who still need to satisfy these requirements.

General Education Requirements (27 Semester Hours)

Communications (6 semester hours)

(English Composition or Speech), including:
WR 121 – English Composition (3)
Humanities (6 semester hours)
(Literature, Western/World Civ., Non-U.S. History, Art /Music History)
Mathematics (3 semester hours)
(Math 100 level course or higher)
Natural Science (6 semester hours)
Including Lab Science (3)
Physical Education (2 semester hours)
Social Sciences (4 semester hours)
(Psychology, U.S. History, Sociology, Geography), including:
PSY 201 Principles of Psychology (3)

Elective Requirements (27 semester hours)

A minimum of 124 semester hours are required to graduate. Enough Elective hours must be complete to meet this requirement.

Lower dicision courses are available online through Concordia University for those who need to satisfy those requirements.

ECE 210 – Intro to ECE (3)
ECE 220 – Development of the Young Child (3)
ECE 225 – Child Safety and Protection (3)*
ECE 230 – Learning Environments for Young Children (3)*
ECE 240 – Integrated Strategies for Teaching (3)*
ECE 245 – Art, Music, & Movement (3)*
ECE 250 – Language and Literature (3)*
ECE 260 – Working with Infants & Toddlers (3)*
ECE 270 – Children with Special Needs (3)* ECE 280 – Guiding the Young Child’s Behavior (3) ECE 285 – Partnering with Families (3)*
*A minimum of 2 semester hours needed to transfer in; hours over 25 will apply towards electives requirement

Early Childhood Education Upper Division Requirements (45 semester hours)

Students must complete a minimum of 45 semester hours of upper division credit. The following courses must be completed at Concordia University:

ECE 375 – Children as Scientists (3)
ECE 390 – Equity and Justice in ECE (3)
ECE 420 – Strategies for Teaching English Language Learners (3)
